We managed to dodge the rain today despite the dire weather forecast, phew!
We spent most of today doing our maths activities outside. We are learning all about shape at the moment so this was a perfect opportunity to get out and create some simple mazes.
We started by ‘programming’ our friend to walk through the grid and collect the marker cones in the correct order. We used language like quarter turn, half turn, clockwise and anticlockwise to create a set of instructions. Instead of writing this down in longhand, we shortened it into a line of code like you would if programming a computer (forward 4 became F4, a quarter turn clockwise became C1/4 etc).
Once we had debugged our line of coding, we thought about how we could make our mazes more challenging. Some of us developed a rule that there were walls that the ‘robot’ could not cross. Some teams decided to put squares into their mazes that were no entry squares. We then swapped with another team and wrote the code to guide our way safely through their maze.
It wasn’t as simple as it looks!
