Y5/6 Archaeology Field Trip

Before the developers extend the housing estate in town, they are carrying out an archaeological survey of the site.  Year 5 and 6 were invited along to see what they had found.  They showed us the foundations of a mediaeval post-mill, and we were able to handle some pottery shards from the same period.  We were also able to handle an Iron-Age loom weight!

The archaeologists showed us how to spot features in the ground by looking for discolouration in the soil.  This has helped them to identify Roman field boundary ditches and Anglo-Saxon post holes on site.  Finally, we were shown a near intact Roman pot that was still in the ground!
