At Hingham Primary we actively promote the independence of the children. At every age and stage, our pupils develop the skills to live and learn independently. We skilfully provide just the right support at just the right time for the children to be successful. As one of our parents said recently, "the perfect amount of support at the perfect time."

We Nurture the children to Learn so they know each time they Achieve. 

Each child has their own journey and their own steps to success in gaining independence. The staff at Hingham Primary School know each child and help them to grow.

Butterflies: learn routines around belongings (water bottles, snack pots, coats, bags, wellies, reading folders), self-care (toileting, washing hands, nose-blowing),  friendships (playing, sharing, waiting, turn-taking) and emotional regulation (listening, calming, talking, understanding, growing). We have short burst learning as a class that children access with ever-reducing support as they gain independence.

Y1-2: All the above and more! Slowly building into learning (writing, reading, number knowledge, fact retrieval, deepening understanding)

Y3-6: Growing independence and taking responsibility for learning. At each step we raise expectations and build on prior learning. We provide engaging deep learning opportunities for the children. We continue to support learners who have gaps or challenges that need that extra support. We ask all children to work hard on the things they find difficult. 

We know that independence means different things to different families. We also know that children find different things difficult and a child may need different support. We are always happy to work with families about how best to support each child. We will always seek to promote the most independence possible: this is because we care so much about children thriving in later life.
