ART: Proportion and Scale

We have been learning about the differences between proportion and scale.

Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object e.g. the size of your nose in comparison to the size of your ears or eyes.

Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects within an artwork e.g. the size of one building in comparison to the one that it stands next to.

We practiced using our pencils and thumbs to take a base unit of measurement and used this to compare the sizes of other parts of things.  We started just by drawing straight lines in proportion to each other, then tried to create a drawing of a window using the same technique.  Finally, we went outside to make sketches of parts of the school building putting into practice everything that we have learned.

Here is an online tutorial if you want to try some proportional drawing at home.

Drawing Proportions

Sighting is a great simple tool to get your drawings proportionally right. You can use it to draw space, object or figures in proportion. We'll show you how to do it!
